2009 Freedom of Information Act Website

Scottish Information Commissioner

The Scottish Information Commissioner is responsible for promoting and enforcing Scotland’s freedom of information (FOI) laws – the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004. These laws give individuals the right to request and receive information held by over 10,000 Scottish public authorities.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Scottish Information Commissioner and the Freedom of Information Act (Scotland), Dynam was tasked with the challenge of producing both a printed summary report and an online web based annual report.

The solution was simple – to sum up the ethos of freedom of information in five words: You Only Have to Ask. Dynam was briefed to create a striking typographic design that was bright, direct and approachable, and would make the public more aware of ‘their right’ under the Act and that people should ‘not be shy’ and ‘just ask’. Initially designed as a web based annual report, the site will evolve over time into a data resource.
